Slooper Society of America

The Slooper Society of America, based in Norway, IL, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Norwegian-American immigration history. The organization serves descendants of the first organized Norwegian emigration to America in 1825, when 53 pioneers departed Stavanger, Norway aboard the 54-foot sloop Restauration. Today, the Slooper Society functions as a historical preservation and educational institution, maintaining comprehensive records of Slooper genealogy and family histories while authenticating and preserving historical artifacts and landmarks associated with this pioneering movement. The organization operates the Norsk Museum collection, housing original articles belonging to the Sloopers and their descendants. Through publication of historical literature, annual meetings, and community programs, the Slooper Society in Norway, IL continues to document and share the immigration narratives that shaped Norwegian-American communities.
